In 1969, co-owner of Kane Motorcar Company, Inc., Sandy Kane, founded the organization with his friend since childhood, David Owens. Sandy is a Pennsylvania native who summered with his family at Plum Beach in Saunderstown, RI in the 1950s. There he met David. They have been friends ever since.
Sandy graduated from Harrington High School in PA in 1964 and then attended Penn-Morton College for two years.
While his friend David was in the army, Sandy worked in the machine shop for K & G Speed Associates outside of Philadelphia. The company sponsored 16 national drag race cars. He then owned a surf shop and opened a part-time high-performance car shop in Saunderstown from 1966-68.
When David Owens returned from his tour of duty in the army, they opened Kane Motorcar Company, Inc., at the present address in North Kingstown. They have never looked back.
Although Sandy was a certified automotive technician, he hasn’t been involved with the Motorcar Company for the last few years. He pursued other avenues of interest. He passed the test for a six passenger Merchant Marine license and went into the charter fishing business in 1982. He still books passengers in the summer and fall on Raizin Kane, his 41-foot Blackfin charter boat based in Wickford.
Attached to the massive garage where Kane Motorcar Company repairs and restores cars is another shop where Sandy pursues another of his interests — guns. He has always enjoyed trap shooting and bird hunting, and is an avid collector of sporting rifles and pistols. He sells, trades, and services both in his shop that is reminiscent of a firearm museum. On display is everything from ceremonial cannons to a Chinese military rifle from the Boxer rebellion.
Sandy lives in Jamestown with Donna, his wife of 39 years. The Kanes raised one son and a daughter and have three grandchildren.
